We'll look at some Zodiacal constellations and you'll find whether your "sign" is what you think it is. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't due to the precession of the equinoxes.
The Zodiacs visible now are Capricorn, Aquarius (a favorite of mine, to trace out); Pisces, Aries, and Taurus, which contains the 7 Sisters. Lots more!
We'll learn the scale of the Milky Way using the light year and, believe it or not, the number of inches in a mile! A model we can all possess, in our minds. Binoculars are helpful but not necessary.
I'll bring a small telescope and explain how it works. You will need the book: THE STARS: A NEW WAY TO SEE THEM Hans Rey. Try to get the latest edition. I may have a copy or two to look at in class. You'll want this gem! Still the best guide to the constellations ever written, for beginners.
Plan to see Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus. We'll see the sight that changed world history forever, with Galileo.
